Answer: “This year’s Arjuna award goes to Somnath for his outstanding achievement in the field of athletics”— as soon as the news of Somnath winning the Arjuna award was announced, tears of joy started trickling down the cheeks of the natives of Hojai, the village where he was born. It was here where Somnath was born in 1985, played with other children in the green pastures and went to the village primary school. Having completed his primary schooling he went to the nearby district headquarters to study further. He attended a government run secondary school. There he showed keen interest in sports activities. He was fortunate to get the guidance and motivation of his sports teacher who once commented that one day Somnath would become a sports star. Unfortunately, Somnath’s father passed away. As he was the sole earning member of his family, Somnath had to drop his studies for a living. He got work in a tea stall as a helper. His earnings were meagre, his work would consume all his time. His dream of becoming a sports star got shattered for the moment. Often at night when he would go for sleep depression took him over. He felt remorse that his talent would go waste and he would die one day unsung, unremembered.
After two years working in the tea stall as a helper, a turning point came in his life. He came across a news clipping in a newspaper sheet which was used as a wrapper. It was an advertisement for attending a training program for budding sports persons. The advertisement mentioned that the cost of the training program would be borne by the concerned authorities. Thanks to his literacy, he could read the most important news item. He grabbed the opportunity and attended the year long training program. On successful completion of the training program the authorities selected him for national level championship where he bagged the gold medal. In the subsequent years, he participated in many international level championships winning gold medals.
Somnath in an interview with a TV channel acknowledged the role of his school sports teacher who guided him in his formative years. In recognition of his achievement, The government awarded him the Arjuna Award.
