CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas, and LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. The main difference between the two comes down to what they’re made of. CNG is mostly methane, while LPG is mainly propane. Now, the questions that usually pop into our minds are: What exactly are CNG and LPG? And how are they different from each other?

What is CNG?

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) essentially is squeezed methane gas (CH₄), thereby forming a cleaner and greener fuel. It’s described as a “clean fuel,” because it’s much less harmful to the environment; it doesn’t release pollutants in the same way that other fuels do.

To make CNG, natural gas (which is mostly methane) is compressed until it takes up less than 1% of its original space. It’s then stored in tough, high-pressure tanks, usually shaped like cylinders or spheres, at pressures of 20–25 MPa (that’s 2,900–3,600 psi for those who like specifics).

One of the best things about CNG is that it is really cheap, i.e., it is significantly cheaper to run on than premium petrol. For car owners who also want to save money and do their part for the planet, this is a no-brainer. That’s why more and more people are switching from petrol or diesel to CNG. It’s not just good for your wallet; it’s good for the environment too!

What is LPG?

LPG is a mixture of butane, propane, and other light petroleum products. It refers to liquefied petroleum gas. LPG is a very fast-burning fuel that produces a ton of heat. It is a clean-burning fuel because it has almost no sulfur, which means fewer harmful emissions.

LPG is often sold in portable gas cylinders, which makes it easy to transport and store safely. LPG is mainly used in cooking foods in our kitchens and restaurants. Natural gas is an industry darling because it’s reliable and can do just about everything, from running forklifts to heating up industrial boilers or powering other equipment.

Difference between CNG and LPG

  • CNG is a green fuel because it contains less sulfur. LPG is a fast-burning fuel due to the propane, butane, and other light hydrocarbon gases.
  • CNG is a lightweight gas. It is lighter than air, whereas LPG is heavier than air.
  • CNG remains a gas under High pressure or compression, whereas LPG changes to liquid form under high pressure.
  • CNG is sold at CNG gas stations and mostly transported via gas pipelines or gas tankers. LPG is sold in gas cylinders so it is easy to transport and store.
  • CNG is less harmless in case of leakage because it disperses quickly into the atmosphere. Due to its weight, LPG spreads to the lower floor or ground areas, making it more risky.
  • CNG is a cleaner and more eco-friendly fuel alternative to gasoline. LPG is used in cooking and heating. It is also used in industry.

Calorific Values of LPG and CNG

CNG has a low calorific value of 35 to 40 MJ/m3 while LPG has a high calorific value of 90 to 95 MJ/m3. So, LPG is more efficient than petrol, diesel, biogas, and CNG.
